What drives you? I am driven by a strong-sense of personal responsibility for the Earth. I had the privilege of a safe upbringing, access to education and freedom to travel and experience the world and its incredible eco-systems. I am in a position to help, so I should. I am also driven by an understanding of how urgent the situation is, in terms of irreversible positive feedback loops in the environment. However, I am heartened by understanding that massive differences can be made with relatively little effort by applying the right pressure at the right time, to “tip the scales”. For example, in a developing country, offering a small investment which covers the difference between developing a coal plant and a solar farm can mitigate 30 years’ worth of carbon emissions.
What projects do you work on that you love or are most passionate about and why? I enjoy projects that inspire people who were not originally interested in environmental policy or the climate situation, to develop a deeper understanding, care and get on-board.
Career highlight/game changing project/something that made a big impact: While I was working at ZERO, I worked with the Head of Finance to organise one of the main sessions at the annual climate change conference. The session included the Norwegian Prime Minister, Opposition Leader, the Director of Vietnam’s largest climate change NGO and the CEO of a renewable energy transition company. They were debating on pulling investment away from Norway’s fossil fuel industry and investing in renewable energy in Vietnam. Solberg (PM) said “Let’s not shoot ourselves in the foot.” Støre (Opposition Leader) responded, “Better to shoot ourselves in the foot, than in the head!” The media went wild. It was exciting to be the driving force behind such important public discourse.
